Independent Spirit A— What Now?

While I was performing one of my frequent perusals of ifc.com—generally for the purpose of re-watching Portlandia clips—I saw an ad for THIS.

First of all, I had no idea the Independent Spirit Awards were even televised, but what excited me more was seeing Joel McHale’s face right next to the title. I have been saying for ages that he would be an excellent choice to host an awards show, so I am just tickled that there are some similarly minded people out there. Sure, it would be nice to see him employ that perfect comedic timing for a higher-profile and more pop culture-laden affair, like the Golden Globes or the Emmys, but you know what? I love awards shows. I love Joel. I will be watching this. Probably whilst fantasizing about being cocooned inside those long, tux-clad limbs. Besides, it will be nice to see a show that promises some slightly different victors than the all-but-predetermined Oscar winners of the following night.

  1. I wish I could understand what it is about award shows that you love, Brandy (aside from the joys of viewing Joel McHale). I have yet to sit through ANY award show (of any kind) without drifting off... enlighten me, please.

  2. Ah, yes, that IS the question: what is it about a mostly boring affair that attracts me so? Well, other than the fashions--both good and bad--the short answer is that one must view the whole show in order to catch the brief moments of humor, like the host cracking jokes about show biz or a particularly good acceptance speech. There's just something about seeing glimpses into the real personalities of actors I only know from the characters they play.
